The story continues: Wout Weghorst gets first Netherlands call up

16/03/18 | SciSports

Getting your first call up for your country must be a very special moment in your life. Thanks to newly appointed national coach Ronald Koeman this was the case for seven Dutch players on the 7th of March 2018. Among these players is Wout Weghorst, central striker of Eredivisie side AZ Alkmaar. Besides Weghorst is doing very well in recent seasons he is also a special part of SciSports’ company history.

It's going on: Wout Weghorst making the next step in his career. Let’s look back at the summer of 2014. Weghorst made a free transfer to Eredivisie side Heracles Almelo after a season with second division club FC Emmen where he mainly played as substitution.

At the time we tipped Weghorst to the scouting team of Heracles Almelo, an early adopter club of SciSports’ services, because of his remarkably good statistics. This was actually one of the first results of our method in practice.

After becoming a starter in his first season at Heracles Almelo, he grew into club topscorer (with 15 goals) and made his debut for the Netherlands U21 in the second one. This resulted in a reported 1.5 million Euros move to AZ Alkmaar before the start of the ’16-’17 season.

At AZ Alkmaar Weghorst continued impressing by finishing his first season as the club topscorer with 13 goals. One season later, the current ’17-’18 campaign, he already managed to score 12 goals in 25 Eredivisie matches and has become the captain of the current number three of the Eredivisie.

This all together resulted in his first call up for the selection of the Dutch national team for the friendlies against England and Portugal later this month.

We want to congratulate Wout Weghorst with another big and impressive step in his career. We from SciSports are very proud to have played a little role in his career and look forward to whatever comes on his path in the future.
