In Episode 3 of Heart of the Game, we sit down with Mike Salmon to explore a football journey that stretches from the pitches of England to the mountains of British Columbia. From making his professional debut as a 17 year old goalkeeper to shaping player development in Canada today, Mike’s story is packed with experience, honesty, and a healthy dose of humor.

Mike looks back on his early days in English football, when he was quite literally learning on the job. Thrown into senior football as a teenager and even sharing the field with another 17 year old goalkeeper at the opposite end, he describes those moments as sink or swim. In a joking tone, Mike says:

“Professional football teaches you fast. At seventeen I was learning on the job, and as a goalkeeper you either sink or swim. Thankfully, with a name like Salmon, I managed to swim. Every challenge, every mistake, every setback became part of the resilience you need to survive in this position.”

Those early years included spells at Blackburn Rovers and several lower league clubs, where he collected valuable minutes and tough lessons. His move to Charlton Athletic brought him into the top division, with big crowds and big expectations. Alongside the highlights came serious injuries that tested both his body and his belief, shaping the way he later viewed performance, recovery, and the mental side of being a professional.

When injury finally signaled that his playing career could not last forever, Mike chose not to drift away from the game. Instead, he invested in coaching qualifications and prepared for the next phase of his life in football. That decision eventually led him to Arsenal FC, where he worked as a goalkeeper coach across multiple age groups. He shares stories from his time in North London, from training some of the best young keepers around to being involved in key decisions on who the club should sign. You will also hear what he really thinks about life inside one of the most famous clubs in world football, told in his calm, self deprecating style.

From there, Mike’s journey took him across the Atlantic to Canada. What began as a lifestyle decision for his family turned into an entirely new football chapter. He joined the Vancouver Whitecaps, stepping into a very different soccer culture from the one he had known in England. He recalls arriving in Vancouver and meeting people who did not even know who the local professional club were, a sharp contrast to the football obsessed communities he grew up in. Over time, he has watched the game grow in British Columbia, both in the stands and on the training ground.

Today, Mike serves as Senior Coordinator, Player Development at BC Soccer, helping to guide the next generation of players across a vast province. He talks about the challenges of reaching remote communities, the importance of creating real pathways for talented young players, and how tools like data and modern coaching support can help unearth the next star from unexpected places.

Throughout the conversation, Mike shares the lessons he has learned at every stage of his career. He reflects on what makes a good coach, how young players can build resilience, and why the goalkeeper position remains one of the most demanding and unique roles in sport. He explains why he always tried to prevent shots rather than just save them, why he loved coming for crosses, and why he still looks for keepers who are brave enough to do the difficult things. His stories and his humour filled reflections offer valuable insights for parents, coaches, players, and anyone who loves the game.

This episode is more than a list of clubs and appearances. It is the story of someone who learned quickly, laughed through the pressures, crossed continents for the sport he loves, and now uses that journey to help young athletes write their own stories in football.
