The return to the 1. Bundesliga
How we supported the German club to successfully compete with less resources than competitors.
SC Paderborn 07 bottomed the table during the 2014-2015 1. Bundesliga campaign and thus got relegated to the 2. Bundesliga. They got relegated for the second time in a row after finishing 18th during the 2. Bundesliga 2015-2016 season.
In 2016-2017, after finishing on the 18th place in 3rd league, they solely did not relegate the third time in a row due to license problems at 1860 Münich. Things had to change, and things had to change quickly. After testing our platform extensively, they eventually signed an official cooperation in the summer of 2018.
One of the main challenges for SC Paderborn 07 was to restructure their scouting process in a way that would enable them to outperform competitors. This would be one of the key aspects for building a team that is capable to play for promotion to the 2. Bundesliga. All to reach the ultimate goal, playing in the 1. Bundesliga again.
To give substance to this restructuring, SC Paderborn 07 and SciSports eventually started their official collaboration in the summer of 2018. By using SciSports’ football intelligence platform, the scouting department of the German club was able to scan every region, country and competition worldwide at a glance. By flagging the players matching their criteria with this data-based approach, they have been able to focus their eyes efficiently on potential transfer targets.
What Paderborn SC have to say about SciSports
We use SciSports’ platform on a daily basis, as it gives us quick and easy access to an extensive source of information with respect to the quality, development and potential of players.
The most important acknowledgement that we as SciSports received is an article featuring SC Paderborn’s Martin Przondziono. In this article, published in ‘Sport Bild’, the Manager Sport explains how they are using SciSports and why this is beneficial to the scouting process of SCP.
Overall, the rise of SC Paderborn 07 is visible both on and off the pitch. Being able to perform structurally better while simultaneously using less budget than their competitors is an outstanding achievement.
SC Paderborn 07 secured promotion to the 1. Bundesliga by finishing second on 2. Bundesliga’s league table during the 2018-2019 season. This becomes even a bigger achievement considering their promotion from the 3. Bundesliga to the 2. Bundesliga just one season earlier.
